A recent report by ESADE EcPol and Google, “Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sector: How to Accelerate Its Adoption in the Spanish Administration“, analyzes in depth the potential of AI to improve public management, offering us a guide for the path ahead.
Current Problems and Challenges of the Administration
Our administration, despite its daily efforts, faces significant challenges that directly impact efficiency and citizen satisfaction. According to the report's survey of 1.500 public employees, the main ones are:
- Excess paperwork: 35% of respondents point to bureaucratic burden as the main obstacle in their day-to-day work. This situation not only slows down the ability to respond, but also consumes valuable time that could be dedicated to tasks with greater impact.
- Lack of efficiency: 16% of employees demand more efficient management, highlighting the need to optimize processes and resources to offer better service.
- Limited resources and bureaucracy: These challenges are often exacerbated by management based on manual processes, an overload of repetitive tasks and difficulty in analyzing large volumes of data.
AI Opportunities for Government: Data Driving Change
Artificial intelligence, and particularly Generative AI, emerges as a key solution to overcome these obstacles, offering unprecedented opportunities to radically transform the way we work and serve citizens. The study data is clear:
- Significant impact on administrative tasks: It is estimated that the tasks of the 67% of public employees (more than 960.000 people) could improve by between 10% and half thanks to generative AI. For a 9% additional (around 130.000 workers), the impact would be over 50%. This means freeing up time for jobs with more added value and human creativity.
- Boosting productivity and the economy: The mass adoption of AI could generate a 9% increase in productivity per worker in the Spanish Public Administration in a decade, translating into 7.000 million euros per year of additional Gross Value Added (GVA). for the Spanish economy.
- Reduction of time and costs: AI has the potential to halve response times of administrative procedures and reduce operating costs by 25%This would translate into a more agile, faster and more efficient administration for everyone.
- Improved decision-making: AI can analyze large volumes of data to provide accurate and informed information, optimizing planning and public policy formulation.
- Personalized and proactive services: Since xatbots From smart devices that resolve doubts, to systems that anticipate citizen needs, AI allows us to offer a more adapted and efficient service.
