Eurostat's interactive publication "Digitalisation in Europe 2025" available

Did you know that in 2024, 13% of companies in the European Union (EU) used artificial intelligence technologies? Or that 72% of Internet users used online banking services, compared to 56% in 2014? Did you know that 24% of EU companies made electronic sales in 2024?

All these are data extracted from the 2025 edition of Eurostat's interactive publication "Digitalization in Europe”, a publication that provides easy-to-understand statistics on information and communication technologies (ICT) and how people and businesses use digital technologies, including e-government. What are the digital skills of European citizens and professionals; how businesses adopt digital technologies; and how people use public and other online services are some of the data provided in this guide.

The information is presented divided into three sections:

Electronic government

The publication notes that people are increasingly relying on the Internet for many administrative procedures today. E-government solutions can offer a wide range of benefits for both governments and citizens, including increased efficiency and services. One of the advantages, for example, is that it allows citizens to obtain information from public authorities at any time.

In accordance with the objectives of the EU Digital Decade, all key public services for businesses and citizens must be fully online by 2030.

In 2024, 70% of people aged 16 to 74 in the EU reported having used a public authority website or app in the previous 12 months. However, this figure varied widely across EU countries: more than 90% of people had used e-government in the last 12 months in Denmark (99%), the Netherlands (96%), Finland and Sweden (both 95%). Meanwhile, the same was true for only 32% of people in Bulgaria and 25% of people in Romania. In Spain, the figure is 79,7%, nine points above the EU average.

When analyzing the different e-government activities in more detail, it is revealed that in 2024, people reported having used e-government services in the previous 12 months most frequently to obtain information about services, benefits, laws, opening hours or similar (44%). This was followed by accessing personal information (40%) and downloading or printing official forms (38%).
