The advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are profoundly transforming the field of cybersecurity. Despite the opportunities these technologies offer to prevent threats and strengthen the protection of digital systems, they can also be used to identify vulnerabilities, automate attacks and increase their scope and speed.
Faced with this scenario, the The European Commission has presented the Action Plan on Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence, an initiative that will mobilise Member States, industry and different European organisations to strengthen the Union's digital security. The plan builds on the European regulatory framework on AI and cybersecurity and aims to ensure that new AI models are developed and used safely.
Among the planned measures is the creation, planned for 2027, of a European capacity for the assessment of advanced AI models to analyse their risks and strengthen their supervision. There will also be work with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) to facilitate access for European organisations to advanced AI systems applied to cybersecurity.
The plan also includes the development of a secure platform to test AI solutions in simulated environments, with special attention to critical sectors such as energy, health, transport, finance and public administrations. In parallel, the use of AI technologies will be promoted to detect and correct vulnerabilities more quickly, as well as to prevent and respond to cyberattacks.
Finally, the Commission will promote the European Grand Challenge of AI for Cybersecurity, a competition aimed at fostering innovation and the development of own solutions. This initiative is part of the European strategy to strengthen technological sovereignty and expand European capabilities in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
