“The Digital Society 2026”: a more connected and open citizenry to artificial intelligence

The quantitative report The Digital Society 2026 (with data from 2025), prepared by theNational Observatory of Technology and Society (ONTSI), offers an X-ray of the state of digitalization in Spain and its impact on daily life, well-being and the social perception of technology.

The study confirms the high penetration of digital devices in homes: the 97,2% of the population has a smartphone and the 57,7% have a laptopIn addition, users spend an average of 3 hours and 49 minutes daily to the use of digital devices outside of work or academic hours. Regarding social networks and messaging applications, WhatsApp remains the most used tool, with frequent use that, in most cases, is repeated several times a day.

This edition incorporates for the first time a specific analysis on the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The data shows a more intense adoption among the younger generations, who are more inclined to experiment and integrate these technologies into their daily lives. Among the most common uses are: text writing (38,5%) and the translation (22,8%).

Overall, the report concludes that Spanish society continues to advance in its digitalization process, with an increasingly widespread presence of technology, but also with a growing awareness of the challenges, risks and limitations associated with its use.
