The European Union (EU) will have the the world's first comprehensive regulation of artificial intelligence (AI).. The European Parliament has approved the Law on Artificial Intelligence, which guarantees security and respect for fundamental rights without interfering with the drive for innovation. The Regulation was approved with 523 votes in favor, 46 against and 49 abstentions.
The aim of this law is to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability in the face of high-risk AI, while boosting innovation and making Europe a leader in the sector. The Regulation sets a series of obligations for AI depending on the potential risks and the level of impact.
The new rules ban certain applications of artificial intelligence that threaten citizens' rights, such as biometric categorization systems based on sensitive characteristics and the indiscriminate capture of facial images from the Internet or surveillance camera recordings to create facial recognition databases. Also prohibited will be emotion recognition in the workplace and schools, citizen scoring systems, predictive policing (when based solely on a person's profile or assessment of their characteristics) and AI that manipulates human behavior or exploits people's vulnerabilities.
