Public personnel positively value the use of AI in their day-to-day lives and highlight the importance of training in this area

Within the framework of Local.IA project, the Barcelona Provincial Council has collected the opinions of public sector workers to assess the value that artificial intelligence (AI) can bring to different repetitive tasks. As a general rule, administrative workers see an opportunity in AI to reduce repetitive tasks, but they need training and clear instructions from their administrations to deploy AI responsibly in the exercise of their functions.

In the survey, seven areas were proposed in which these tasks can be grouped:

  • Hiring
  • Citizen service
  • Administrative management
  • Grants
  • Budget management
  • Human resources management
  • Intervention and control of legality

Although the people surveyed believe that generative AI can have a positive impact in all areas, three stand out as having the best ratings: the area of contracting, citizen service and general administrative processing.

Hiring:

73% of people surveyed say they have used AI in the last few months to develop or support their work. Only 8% of people surveyed work in organizations that have a plan or clear instructions on how public workers can use AI in their workplace.
