Know the key dates of the Artificial Intelligence Regulation (RIA)

On July 12, 2024, the definitive text of the Regulations'Artificial Intelligence' (RIA) in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The purpose of this new regulation is to improve the functioning of the internal market and promote the adoption of reliable and people-centred Artificial Intelligence (AI), while at the same time ensuring a high level of protection of health, safety and fundamental rights, including the protection of the environment, with regard to the harmful effects of AI systems.

Highlights of the schedule

  • July 12, 2024 – Official publication of the Artificial Intelligence Regulation in the Official Journal of the European Union (DOUE). It is recommended to initiate preparatory actions such as the identification of AI systems and personnel training.
  • August 1, 2024 – The Artificial Intelligence Law comes into force.
  • February 2, 2025 – The following come into force: general provisions and the prohibited AI practicesAdministrations will have to guarantee AI literacy and avoid vetoed technologies.
  • May 2, 2025 – Completion of codes of good practice for general purpose AI models.
  • August 2, 2025 – Implementation of obligations for notifying authorities, notified bodies and providers of AI models. European governance is also activated with the creation of the AI ​​Office and the European AI Council.
  • August 2, 2026 – The Regulation will be applicable in its entirety except for high-risk AI systems.
  • August 2, 2027 – The obligations will apply to all high-risk AI systems, regardless of their date of introduction to the market.
  • 2030-2031 – Evaluations and reports to review the effectiveness of the Regulation and its implementation structure.
