The director of the AOC, Miquel Estape, presented the challenges and opportunities of digital identity in Europe at the conference “New Digital Identity Model: telematics and secure” organized by SOCINFO. In his speech entitled “eIDAS 2, the great hope", I stamped has explained how eIDAS 2, the European Union regulation that establishes the legal framework to ensure that electronic transactions are more secure, faster and more efficient, regardless of the EU country in which they occur, represents a paradigm shift in digital identity management in Europe, with the European Wallet as a central element.
The eIDAS 2 proposal aims to improve European digital identity, facilitating access to secure and reliable solutions for all citizens, in the public and private sectors, at local, national and European levels.
Opportunities
– Creating a single digital market with secure cross-border transactions
– Boosting new business models based on granular identity verification
– Greater citizen control over personal data through wallet self-sovereign
– Strategic positioning for companies that adopt qualified solutions
Challenges
– Technical complexity in interoperability between national and private systems
– Resistance to change in traditional authentication habits
– Strict data protection and fraud prevention requirements
– Need to harmonize heterogeneous legal frameworks between member states
Successful implementation will require close collaboration between the public and private sectors, with investments in infrastructure and citizen awareness campaigns. eIDAS 2 places Europe at the forefront of digital sovereignty, but its impact will depend on the ability to balance security, usability and technological flexibility.
