The European Commission has taken another step in its strategy to promote a European digital identity. He published the first version of a toolbox common EU to implement the European digital identity wallet (EUDI Wallet). This technical backbone, developed by Member States in close collaboration with the Commission, will be the basis for designing a prototype wallet that can be used for testing in a variety of use cases. The aim of the document is to provide a set of specifications needed to develop an interoperable European digital identity wallet solution based on common standards and practices.
This project will complement the legislative proposal on a reliable and secure digital identity and is a crucial first step that will enable the creation of a robust framework for digital identification and authentication based on common standards across the EU. It aims to ensure a high level of trust in digital transactions in Europe. Member States will continue to work closely with the Commission to continuously update the Toolbox.
The requirements and specifications set out in the toolbox are not binding on Member States until the legislative proposal on the European digital identity wallet has been adopted by the co-legislators.
The European Digital Identity is an initiative of the European Commission to provide a secure and simple way for people and businesses to access online services in any European Union country and public and private sector organisation. It proposes a practical, secure, interoperable, reliable and efficient solution, through the use of advanced authentication and encryption technologies.
The European digital identity will be available to citizens and businesses of the European Union through a European digital identity portfolio to access services, both public and private, online or offline, across the EU .
The European digital identity portfolio is aligned with the European Self-Managed Digital Identity (EBSI) pilot in which the AOC Consortium participates prominently and in which we have already developed two successful concept tests. This positions the AOC to be leaders in its application in the State.
