Signed the Declaration on digital rights: EU values ​​and citizenship, at the center

The Council, the European Parliament and the Commission have signed the "European Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles for the Digital Decade” which aims to ensure that the European Union achieves the goal that its digital transformation is in line with its values.

This declaration refers to open digital sovereignty, respect for fundamental rights, the rule of law and democracy, inclusion, accessibility, equality, sustainability, resilience, security, improving the quality of life, availability of services and respecting the rights and aspirations of all people. The text should serve as a reference for businesses and other stakeholders.ereshealth organizations that develop or implement new technologies.

The Declaration should guide policy makers as they reflect on their conception of digital transformation in order to:

  • place people at the center of digital transformation;
  • supporting solidarity and inclusion, through connectivity, education, training and digital capabilities, fair and equitable working conditions and access to online digital services;
  • reiterate the importance of freedom of choice when interacting with artificial intelligence algorithms and systems and in an equitable digital environment;
  • encourage participation in the digital public space;
  • increase safety, protection and empowerment in the digital environment, particularly for children and young people, while ensuring privacy and individual control over data;
  • promote sustainability.

Regarding privacy, the Declaration states that citizens must be guaranteed the confidentiality of their communications and protection against illegal monitoring or interception.

Finally, the agreement on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace ensures the harmonization of the Declaration with the ongoing negotiations on the AI ​​Regulation and with the Health and Safety Directive work
