New procedure for declaring areas of archaeological protection (EPA)

Ruins of the Roman amphitheater of Tarragona next to buildingsArchaeological protection sites (EPAs) are sites that have not been declared of national interest where, by material evidence, historical background or other evidence, the existence of archaeological or paleontological remains is presumed.

A favorable report from the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage is required for the EPA declaration. The case may be initiated ex officio by the Administration of the Generalitat or at the request of another public administration or any natural or legal person.

The EPAs are determined by resolution of the Minister of Culture, after a prior hearing of the interested parties.eressats and the affected town hall. The town hall and the interested parties must be informed.eresof the resolution, which does not have to be published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

To support this management, the Department of Culture has implemented the new service CLT - Declaration of Archaeological Protection Areas.
