Criteria for a quality participatory process

La Network of Transparent Governments has prepared the document “Quality criteria for participatory processes”For the local world, which collects, in a simple and methodical way, what are the main elements to carry out a quality participatory process.

The citizen participation group that is part of the Network of Transparent Governments has collected in a document elements and quality criteria that are useful for local governments who want to develop participatory processes.

Participation is a tool with great potential for democratic improvement but could have negative effects if it is not carried out with commitment and rigor. On the other hand, the concept of open government, which currently marks the governance of any Western country, represents an effort in the direction of improving democracy, making more and better information available to citizens with programs of transparència and open data, and making citizen participation in public decisions more accessible.

In order to be useful for local governments who want to develop participatory processes, then the document offers a set of elements for reflection when it comes to promoting participatory processes, subject to the particular conditions of each context. The authors insist, however, that this short script is not intended to be a comprehensive list or a standard recipe.
