More than 200 organizations and 400 cybersecurity professionals from 29 European countries checked their resistance to cyber attacks. This exercise was organized by theEuropean Union Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).
During this so-called cyber security exercise Cyber Europe 2014, experts from the public and private sector and cybersecurity agencies, national computer emergency response teams, ministers, telephone companies, energy companies, financial institutions and internet service providers tested their products and their ability to react to real scenarios where cyber security is endangered.
CyberEurope2014 has been the most extensive and comprehensive exercise ever organized in Europe.
During 2013, global attacks based on web platforms increased by almost a quarter, and the total number of data breaches was 61% higher than in 2012. Each of the eight most important data breaches has resulted in a loss of tens of millions of data and at the same time has left 552 million private identities publicly exposed. According to business forecasts, espionage and cybercrime have resulted in annual losses of between $ 300.000 billion and $ 1 trillion during 2013.
This exercise simulated a large-scale crisis related to critical information infrastructures. Soon, ENISA experts will prepare a report that will summarize its main results.
CyberEurope2014 is one cybersecurity exercise on a large scale organized by ENISA every two years; this year it has had the participation of twenty-nine European countries, plus the EU institutions. It consists of three phases throughout the year: the technical phase, which consists of the detection, investigation and mitigation of incidents, as well as the exchange of information in this regard (completed in April); the phase operational / tactical -issue of alerts, crisis assessment, cooperation, coordination, tactical analysis, advice and exchange of information at the operational level- (October and early 2015), and the strategic phase, which examines decision-making, political impact, and public aspects.
