The European Commission publishes a set of guidelines to promote the re-use of public sector information

Eco-Recycle-128Last July, the European Commission published a set of guidelines for promoting the re-use of public sector information in Europe. These managers aim to create value through the exploitation of open data offered by the public sector.

These guidelines have been drawn up on the basis of the conclusions drawn from the Public Consultation carried out during the autumn of 2013 and the recommendations of a group of RISP experts.

These guidelines are also part of the European Commission's recent action plan to promote a prosperous data economy in Europe, published on 2 July, and cover the following aspects:

  •  Licenses for the reuse of public sector information. Guidelines addressed to public bodies to determine the applicable conditions for the reuse of their data.
  •  Data categories most in demand in the EU. Five categories of data are identified for which greater demand has been identified by potential re-users across the EU and which could therefore be considered a higher priority. These categories are as follows:
    •  geographical information (topographic, cadastral, marine, etc.),
    • environmental data (weather, water quality,…),
    • transportation information (transport schedules, traffic status information,…),
    • statistics (demographic and economic information of the country) i
    • business records (economic and property information in relation to companies).
  •  Costs Guidelines for public bodies to calculate prices for access and reuse of their data.
