Arguments for (and against) government opening (#oGov)

Open Every Day

Last March, a talk was held on Open Government in the framework of theLeadership School of the Political Communication Laboratory (LabCom) of the Department of Political Science and Administration of the University of Murcia (CPAUM).

This was the third edition of the Leadership School; focused on the Transparència and Public Responsibility and Marc Garriga participated in module 2, entitled “Responses from the executive to political disaffection: the Open Government”, together with Gabriel Navarro.

Gabriel Navarro explained the basic concepts behind Open Government: reasons, main axes, transparència, participation, collaboration and Marc Garriga "reinforced" the concepts, with a more practical and participatory part, with real examples and went into detail regarding Open Data.

The interesThe highlight of the session, beyond the knowledge disseminated by both trainers, are the arguments for and against the opening of governments by the attendees, extracted from a reflection exercise around it.

Some of the arguments in favor of open data are: knowing and having access to public information, fighting corruption, and achieving greater efficiency in the public sector. On the other hand, some of the arguments against stand out, for example: that in the current context of economic crisis it is better to invest the budget in something more realistic, that information systems are very outdated or that there are many public employees reluctant to the opening of the government.
