CESICAT publishes a guide for the safe use of social networks

The Center for Information Security of Catalonia (CESICAT) periodically publishes guides on issues related to information security. The first of these guides for the general public is on social media.

The Guide to the Safe Use of Social Media is designed for people of all ages. With an understandable language, this little book reviews the main risks we face when we often use a virtual social network, whether playful, such as Facebook, Tuenti, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, etc., or professional, such as LinkedIn or Xing.

The booklet also gives tips on how to use social media safely and how to avoid unpleasant situations. From how to prevent computer infection to how to limit the dissemination of private information on the social network, this booklet helps you to navigate social networks more easily.

The purpose of the document is to encourage responsible use of social media, not to send an alarm message. As the Guide concludes, “social media is not a risk in itself. It is those who use them who can make them a dangerous tool to use. ”
