AOC Support advances towards a digital support and training model: 2025 review
The candidacy for the creation of its own domain for the Catalan linguistic and cultural community on the Internet has met all the criteria established by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is the entity responsible for coordinating the Internet domain name system. This entity made public last September that it authorized the existence of .cat as a new Internet domain and approved the corresponding agreement that will regulate its operation, which will be managed by the puntCAT Foundation.
From now on, the .cat domain will serve to highlight the existence of Catalan culture worldwide. An exceptional fact, highlighted by the fact that this domain is the first to represent a linguistic and cultural group globally, of which our culture can be proud. ICANN has very positively assessed the existence of the Catalan-speaking linguistic and cultural community as a well-defined and represented community through an entity and a project that has received broad support from the community itself.
That is why, given that one of the main objectives of the Consortium of the Electronic Open Administration of Catalonia (AOC Consortium) is to improve inter-administrative collaboration, a collaboration that has a fundamental manifestation in the measures to support the entities. Catalan local authorities, which we have found appropriate to carry out, from the AOC Consortium, the necessary actions so that in the period of three months - period in which the reservation of dominion for the public entities is facilitated - the local entities can access to this reservation.
The Consortium will finance the costs corresponding to the official toponyms of the local entities of Catalonia that request it which will be integrated by the cost of the domains for a period of two years, plus the one of registration. To this end, the Consortium will transfer the amount of the aforementioned costs to the puntCAT Foundation.
In the coming weeks, the AOC Consortium will carry out a communication and promotion campaign to raise awareness of this application period among Catalan local entities, supporting local bodies in the procedure for applying for domain registration. toponyms and, where applicable, other local domains enabling means so that these requests can be made by electronic means.
